I grew up moving around in a military family with my sister and parents. My favorite place was Germany. I finished up high school in 2000, I graduated from Northland College (in Ashland, WI) in 2005 with my degree in biology and secondary education, and then I graduated from University of Phoenix online in 2015 with my degree in environmental science. I taught science classes online for a few years before becoming a learning coach with JEDI Virtual in 2013.
Now, I live in south central Pennsylvania with my husband. We have 5 kiddos between us. Oldest to youngest: Duncan (22), Eiron (20), Keegan (19), Namine (17), and Ronan (5). We have two kitties: a Siamese girl named Kilala and a fluffy, gray boy with three legs named Bodhi. Our family dog is a Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mixed with Mini Poodle), and her name is Pepper Potts. And I have 11 chickens in the backyard!
I am also super lucky to have amazing nieces and nephews in my life. I have 3 nephews (Devin, Jamie, and Dylan) and 3 nieces (Ariana, Emily, and Natalie). They call me Tante, which is German for aunt.
I like doing so many different things! Most of them revolve around learning new things or new skills.
- I really enjoy cooking (and eating) and trying new things. My favorite food is Mexican.
- Each year I learn more about growing my own food. I'm up to 8 raised garden beds and a big trellis in our yard so far. I try new things and learn a lot through trial and error.
- Learning languages has always been fun to me. I learned a lot of German from living in Germany and going to the local school there for a few years. I've studied Spanish on my own for a few years and I'm learning American sign language (ASL).
- I grew up around people who cooked, baked, sewed, knitted, crocheted, cross-stitched, did woodwork, decorated, worked on cars, painted, and so much more. I've come to love a good DIY project, especially now that so much knowledge is at our fingertips! My preferred craft is crochet so that's what I'm usually doing when I've got time to create.
- For fun, I listen to all kinds of music, play Minecraft and Maplestory online, and watch some shows like Supernatural, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Stranger Things, Lucifer, and Miracle Workers. I have a list a mile long of movies and shows I'd like to watch. We are big Marvel fans and I also enjoy animes like One Piece, Bleach, and Inuyasha. I have a lot of fun playing role-playing games like Zombicide and Munchkin and I'm hoping to learn more and play D&D in the near future.

How much work do I have to do today/this week?
Each course has a different number of assignments and styles of assignments ranging from quizzes, discussions, journals or logs, writing assignments, hands-on projects, mini-assignments, and semester projects. In most classes a calendar is automatically created with due dates. Your learning coach will put your course tasks and due dates into a pace chart document to help you stay organized. You should always complete your courses in the order that they are presented. If you need help to create a daily list of tasks to complete or a schedule to follow just reach out to your learning coach for tips and assistance.
What if I turn something in late/can't get it done today?
In general, you will not be deducted late points for turning something in past the due date. The only exceptions are fitness logs for our PE courses or journal entries and work schedules for courses with weekly requirements. Try your best to stick to the due dates so you're guaranteed to finish your course on time and work won't stack up on you. If you're really struggling to complete all of your work in a timely way you should reach out to your student advisor and learning coach for tips and problem solving.
What if I'm sick or have to miss school?
Notify your learning coach, student advisor, and teachers as soon as you can or have your guardian do it for you. Your attendance is based on submitting work and making measured progress each week in all of your courses so you may need to increase your work time later in the week or use the weekend to get caught up. An excuse note that specifies being excused from working online (example: from a doctor's office) may be submitted to your student advisor. For more information please refer to the student handbook on our website.
What if I'm having a technical problem?
In an online school, we're bound to run into a little hiccup now and then with technology. We all work from different types of devices, use various web browsers, and access different platforms, so we have compiled a lot of information to help you out!
Check out our Technical Support page and feel free to submit a tech trouble ticket if you can't find a solution from our support library.
What if I can't finish all of my class on time?
Keep communication open with your support team throughout the semester. If something in your life is not allowing you to focus enough on school you should contact your support team and keep them updated. Your team will work with your unique circumstances to help you find a path to success. If your course end date is coming up and you have had an extenuating circumstance (something major, out of your control, made you miss a lot of work time), submit a course extension request by clicking on this link and explain why you need more time. Our director will review the request and email you an approval or denial for extension. Stay strong, ask for help if you need it, and just keep doing your best no matter what!
What can I do about feeling so stressed or overwhelmed?
Talk to somebody about it! Often times our support team can help find ways of making things manageable, especially if you end up getting behind. Our program is very flexible, and we always find creative ways of helping you reach your goals! But, you have to let us know how you're feeling and what's going on in order for us to provide the best support for you. Your teachers, learning coach, and student advisor are all ready to hear from you and/or your guardians.
