English I (1) is the first semester of an integrated literature and writing course. The literature component of the course includes the study of various literary forms: short story, novel, drama, poetry, and nonfiction selections. The writing component includes the development of the student’s writing skills, using the 6 + 1 writing traits: ideas, organization, voice, word choice (vocabulary), fluency, conventions (which includes grammar and mechanics), and presentation. The literature and writing assignments are approached thematically, with different themes covered each semester
